In this issue, we have:

Most popular IT Performance Measurement themes

Based on our research and experiences with implementations during the past couple of years, we have identified the 3 most popular areas of interest in terms of implementing IT Performance Measurement. While some of the items may seem obvious, others also came as a surprise to our team.

  1. Process Reports and Scorecards
(Incident/Problem/Change process reporting). By far the most common implementation of Performance measurement is to measure the effectiveness of incident, change, problem, service availability and other IT operations related processes.
  2. Projects portfolio management
(Budgeted Vs. Actuals). Companies wish to be able to measure and report on key measures/KPIs for projects in the agreed project portfolio. The key KPIs include cost incurred on projects (budgeted vs. actuals), timeliness, ROI based on agreed success measures for the projects, and reporting at the overall project portfolio level.
  3. Financial Management and Reporting
(Cost Control/Financial Management) - Cost of Services and budget category measurement and reporting (per General Ledger) is most popular and relevant performance measurement implementation among IT managers and leadership.

The blueprint of an IT Performance Measurement Framework

Many IT departments and organizations are attempting to deploy an IT Performance measurement and management framework. The need is clear - you can only manage, if you can measure, and only measure if you have the right metrics. While this is a popular adage, its relevance has not diminished on us after years of involvement with performance measurement and management. We identify 4 key value elements in an ideal blueprint of a performance measurement framework:

  1. Knowledge
A good blueprint for performance measurement should include clear guidance on what to measure, and how to go about measuring it.
  2. Access and Manage data
Ability to access, manage and transform data is a crucial capability required from a proper performance measurement framework. After all, it is about ability to transform data into useful information which leads to cause-and-effect analysis in the end.
  3. Measure and Analyze
Reporting and data analysis capabilities are obvious, but critical requirements from a performance measurement framework. Being able to perform statistical analysis on the gathered data can enhance the value of measurement exercise multiple-folds.
  4. Share and Collaborate
Geographically and functionally distributed organizations will benefit from high-end presentation, publishing, sharing and collaboration capabilities - this is again a very important requirement to make the performance management process and practice successful. Ability to access data when, and in the format that users find most useful is crucial, along with their ability to collaborate to improve the reports as well as to draw better interpretations from the reports and scorecards.

A glimpse of what's coming in 2010
  1. IT Performance Measurement takes center stage
ITpreneurs has published the Trends in IT Performance Management Survey results 2 years running, and is looking to publish a more comprehensive version of the report during 2010. This report is meant for all of you, to share the broad performance measurement trends and maturity among IT departments and IT Organizations, and share the experiences and good practices from around the world.
Your participation therefore is a must. For example, in the 2009 report, one of the short term trends that emerged (undoubtedly due to financial crisis and economic recession the world underwent) organizations were becoming more cognizant of their internal IT spending with the objective to reduce costs. Other trends included Maturity in IT performance reporting going up, and the fact that Excel was still the most common software for reporting on IT Performance. You can find more details on the survey report and trends at this link.
  2. IT Performance Management awards
We are instituting IT Performance Management awards based on received insights, case studies, and experience sharing from the IT professionals involved in IT Performance measurement and management. The awards will be awarded towards best projects and to recognize best professionals, and these awards will be determined by an international Jury of experts. Stay tuned for more information on these awards.
